Pre-Trip Planning
Every traveler should be educated on their trip outline.  Remember it's your responsibility to know:
  • Dates of trip and the time frame at each location.
  • Name of each destination including country, city, arrival date, accommodation at destination with contact information.
  • Transportation used including dates, type of carrier, name of carrier and contact information.
  • Alternative emergency site meeting point in case of program disruption.
  • Name of in country partner/host and contact information.
  • Contact information for the group leader including all means of communications (cellular, email, social media, satellite phone).
Medical Considerations
Doesn't everybody like a good vaccination?
Consider these recommendations from the CDC for your next international travel trip.

Emergency Services Abroad
Since not every region uses "911" as its emergency contact number, it's always good to write down, save on your cellphone, or commit to memory the local emergency number for your destination.  If it's an occasion when you would call "911" in the US for police, fire, and ambulance support, then call the local equivalent.

Do you know what the US Department of State Can and Can't Do in a Crisis?  Many people will forego verifying that their insurance will cover them in a country with a listed travel advisory, and instead rely on the US government to arrange and pay for emergency medical, evacuations, and repatriations. That can be a big mistake though. See what they say here!
